Stopping Phone Calls
The US government maintains a “Do Not Call” registry where you can input your residential phone and mobile phone numbers.
Within 90 days, you should not receive any unsolicited phone calls. If someone does call you, you can actually file a complaint and get a monetary settlement.
Stopping Junk Mail
The Direct Marketing Association has a website where you can “unsubscribe” from many junk mail” pieces including credit offers, catalogues, and magazines. While it is a free service and takes 30-90 days for most mail lists to be purged, the DMA limits the term to 10 years so you must renew every 10 years.
In addition, sign up to the following websites as well to minimize other direct mail pieces
www.directmail.com/mail_preference/
www.optoutprescreen.com – prevents prescreened credit offers coming from the major credit reporting agencies
Catalog choice – a nonprofit organization setup to reduce unsolicited catalog deliveries
Credit Freeze
You may also wish to consider filing a Credit Security Freeze, which prevents anyone from opening new accounts in your name.
I hope that all helps. Please spread the word! The more we stop all these junk calls/mailings, the more trees/electricity we save.
